6 Essentials Every NYC Girl Needs this Fall
Hello! My name is Kate and I’m a full-time graphic designer based in New York City. In my spare time, I write for my women's solo travel and fashion blog, The Modern Nomad. I identify a modern nomad as someone who wants everything out of life. They are someone who believes you don't have to quit your 9-5 job and drop everything to travel the world. Someone who can have their dream career, family life, and can still find the time and resources to travel abroad.
If I had to name one of my favorite things about New York City, it would be New York in the Fall. It’s unlike any other Falls (in my opinion at least). Not only has PSL welcomed us with it’s presence, but it’s also the time of year to swap out that summer wardrobe and slip into something more warm & cozy. Here’s my top 6 essentials every NYC gal needs in her closet this Fall.
Written by Kate Szmurlo, The Modern Nomad
A gal can never have too many sweaters — especially with New York City’s unpredictable weather. When temps drop below 50, I’m excited to crack open my closet full of fall sweaters. This fall, I anticipate wearing a lot of turtleneck sweaters. They’re warm, easy to wear, and make every outfit incredibly chic. This Prada sweater in particular I actually found at a thrift shop— one of the best finds I’ve had in a long time.
PATENT LEATHER BOOTIES
I bought these boots after scouring the internet. They’re what I called, the ‘pull it all together’ kind of boot. No matter what you’re wearing, a patent bootie really takes an outfit to the next level. It can be simple and everyday, but also chic and street ready. Tip: Look for boots with a fun and funky heel. It will definitely up your NYC street game.
ANIMAL PRINT EVERYTHING
I am actually here for the animal print trend this fall. In the past, animal prints have been looked down upon as maybe tacky or too much. The print just really makes any outfit stand out. Leopard, zebra, snake, ( maybe not all at once), but are definite prints I can get on board for. Try pairing leopard print top with a black pant and booties. You’ll be the coolest cat around.
STAPLE BLACK HAT
Let’s be real— hats are for any time of year. My personal favorite accessory is a black wide brimmed hat. It’s a piece to top off any outfit. Other hats I’ve noticed that are trending this fall are berets and skipper hats (or what I like to call a “news boy” hat). No matter what type of hat you decide to wear this fall, hats are always a good idea.
CLASSIC LACE UP BOOTS
My Dr Martens were probably my favorite addition to my fall wardrobe. Not only do they give your outfit a cool edge, they’re also super comfy and make for perfect rain/snow boots (stylish yet functional — win win). Pair these with any skinnys or mom jeans.
OVERSIZED DENIM JACKET
If there’s one thing I’m glad was brought back from the 90s, it would have to be the denim jacket. Denim jackets are a staple to any fall wardrobe. This fall, I’ve noticed a big trend in oversized denim jackets. Wear it with almost everything. Wear denim with denim (my personal favorite). Or wear with a cute dress or fun top.
